The new cast recording of Finian’s Rainbow is everything the CD of a revival should be. It presents a score that is forgotten except for the four or five standards in a thrilling way with great performances, terrific orchestrations and amazing sound.
The principals, especially Cheyenne Jackson and Kate Baldwin both sing the score beautifully and convey a sense of character. There are forgotten songs like the Begat and When the Idle Poor Become the Idol Rich that seem rife for rediscovery by contemporary cabaret artists. And those well known chestnuts like How Are Things in Glocca Morra and Old Devil Moon positively shimmer.
