A Fringe Double Feature

My Fringe Festival experience started with seeing Maris Wicker and Lonny Smith perform Love Noir: The Music of Lenny, Kurt, & Harold.  It was great to see how much the show had grown from its previous staging at Indigo.  The take on the material leaned on the cool/arch side with some interesting juxtapositions, like contrasting the Weill / Hughes Lonely House with the Bernstein / Comden & Green Lonely Town.   My favorite moment int he show was Lonny re-interpreting If I Only Had a Heart as a heartfelt yet uncomfortable way to decline an amorous advance.  Music director Barbara Schelstrate offered solid support to the singers and provided some appreciated moments of musical wit.

Lonny managed to leave the show slightly before the audience did, so he got down the street in time for the start of Run Away with Me — a good thing since he was part of the cast !  Ron and I made it there for the end of the opening number.

The show presented four performers in a joyous romp through contemporary cabaret material.  Terri Allen, Lonny, Justin Ritchie and Emily Everson all had terrific individual moments, and really blended together beautifully on their group efforts.
